Donation and Support

For 100 years YMCA Perth has delivered programs in the belief that prevention is better than cure. At YMCA we put this philosophy into practice through a wide range of programs aimed at strengthening people, families and communities. Many of our programs focus on building healthy bodies, minds and spirit through recreation, training and child care while others are centered around engaging children and young people then supporting those at risk through counselling, training, mentoring and other interactive activities.

Two programs which dramatically illustrate YMCA Perth’s commitment are:

Cambodia is a country recovering from decades of civil war and other conflicts. Poverty is the norm with more than 77% of Cambodian’s living on less that US $2 per day, and 35% of the population living below their national poverty line. Access to education and health services is extremely limited and women and children in particular are open to exploitation.

YMCA Perth has recently begun a project to assist Hagar International in the valuable work they do in Cambodia. Hagar has operated in Cambodia since 1994 and operates an integrated model of recovery and reintegration for women and children who have been victims of trafficking and abuse. Many of the women are mothers and for them to receive the support and training they need to re-enter the workforce and to reduce their vulnerability to being abused again, they need a safe place for their children to go to during the day. A pre-school program for around fifty children satisfies some of this need. YMCA Perth is providing both financial and practical support to this program based in Phnom Penh.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program

Big Brothers Big Sisters’ community-based mentoring is a preventative program which involves the development of a long-term one-to-one friendship between an adult mentor and young person aged 7 to 17 years. The program is designed to be of greatest assistance to vulnerable young people in need of additional adult support and friendship.

YMCA of Perth has been supporting and operating the mentoring program in Perth for six years. Its great success has been based around finding suitable mentors for young people in need of support and friendship. We are always looking for more mentors, particularly men, to fill a large waiting list and welcome any financial help you can give.

How You Can Support YMCA Projects

The Cambodia project and Big Brothers Big Sisters represent just two of the many diverse programs that the YMCA undertakes every year. You can support our work by giving a donation to either or both programs by completing the online form (available soon) or contacting our Fundraising Manager below.

Donations can be made in a variety of ways whether they are monetary or non cash gifts in the form of property. Other unique ways you can give back to your community include shares and assets or even your own time by volunteering your services to the Y. Whatever level of involvement you have, in either a donation or volunteering, the choice is up to you.

Should you wish more information on the programs above, discuss a giving program or make a donation, please do not hesitate to give our Fundraising Manager a call on: (08) 9473 8400.
